Layout decisions

Menu left, order right — the order pane is fixed at 308px and never scrolls out of view. Staff must see the running total while adding, or the "review before pay" step becomes the first time anyone checks.

4-column grid, 120px tiles. Every target clears the 60px floor from the source discussion with room to spare. 12 items visible without scrolling covers a street-food menu; a bigger menu should push items into categories, not shrink tiles.

Popular is the default category, not "All". The discussion is explicit: popular items must be obvious and findable in seconds.

Channel selector (dine-in / takeaway / delivery) sits at the top of the order pane. It drives KDS colour, so getting it wrong is expensive downstream — FD-CORE-7.

Order entry speed

One tap adds a simple item. Two taps + confirm adds a modified one. The modifier sheet is a single screen with no nesting — the <20s target dies in submenus.

Extras show their price delta inline and the sheet header shows the running item price live. The customer is told the number before it lands on the order — FLOW-031.

Size and spice default to the common choice (Regular, Medium) so the sheet is dismissible immediately. Defaults are the real speed feature; "no default" costs two taps on every single order.

Repeat-last and favourites live in the top bar, not buried — FD-ORD-8, FD-ORD-11. Regulars are a large share of volume.

The order number

86px on the confirm screen. This is the single most important glyph in the system — it appears on four surfaces plus thermal paper. It gets the display face and nothing competes with it.

B07 — the B is the terminal's block prefix, not a daily sequence (ADR 0005 / FD-DEC-5). Accepted cost of offline allocation: staff cannot read order count off the number.

Errors & recovery

86'd items grey out live from the kitchen and cannot be tapped — FD-KIT-7 → FD-CAT-3. Selling something the kitchen cannot make is the most expensive failure in the system.

Edit before send is free and inline. Void after send opens a manager code in place — no user switch, no logout mid-queue (FD-SEC-10). Both identities are recorded.

Transfer has an explicit pending state with a named next action. The customer must never be left standing while staff guess — FD-PAY-2.

No shift open blocks the sale. Taking cash with nowhere to book it is exactly what the shift boundary exists to prevent — FD-SHIFT-7.

Degraded modes

The banner names which layer is active, never just "offline" (ADR 0003). Staff behave differently on LAN, on Bluetooth, and on paper — so the UI must distinguish them.

Paper-only is the loudest state in the product. No network, no peer, printer is the only path to the kitchen — and if the printer also fails, trading stops. That is the one screen staff must never misread.

Cross-cutting

The palette is a sunlight decision. Near-black on near-white with saturated accents used only for state — a mid-tone UI is unreadable at max brightness on a cheap tablet outside GB.

Colour carries three jobs: channel, ticket age, line state. On this surface only channel and state appear; age belongs to the KDS. Stacking all three on one surface is where KDS designs usually fail.

Not yet designed: one-handed reach zones. Everything here assumes two hands at a fixed counter. Worth testing against a real counter height before build.
